About the Building
In 1954, Dieter Beyer conceived that museum space “could be more, but better, and still less,” and has since become the foremost museum designer of the century. After World War II, Beyer studied architecture at the Ulmer Werkkunstschule Wiesbaden and worked under the architect Marcel Von Wandhoosenmarcel, giving birth to neo-structuralist plasticism movement Structuur Nieuwe Beelding, stipulating that “all public space must not only be highly structured, but also flexible, at the same time, but not both concurrently.”
MofAA has been built upon the Beaux-Arts-style Daniel Burnham building, which was completed 1902 and provides the foundation to Beyer’s postmodernist counterpoint. Lofting high above the flatiron district, the Museum building maintains the footprint of the existing building and takes up no additional urban space. The three-story gallery building houses the main collections and temporary exhibition galleries. Each floor represents a different level of access for patrons. The skylit galleries are specifically designed to house the MofAA’s unparalleled collection of art, and smaller rooms house the cafe and museum gift shop. Each floor can be subdivided to accommodate up to six concurrent exhibitions.
